Ferrari FF article, making of
by IKE 07-Feb-2011 22:49

This is an inside view about the Ferrari FF article. It was written only a few days after the first official photos and information was released. Until today only a couple of photos are also released. The article presents the history, the design and most important the possible inner workings of FF’s 4WD system.---

I have noticed the “Connectable 4WD System” patent a few years ago (the filename says 10-9-2005!) and the press release of the FF was a perfect match. Even today there are no articles with details about it. Only the Top Gear website had a small post a few days after my article with some vague details. Of course I don’t claim that robotpig is their source (you never know!) but most importantly their description is in tune with our article. Patents are legal documents and both text and drawings are sometimes difficult to comprehend. I presented the context of the document as clearly as possible with the help of simple diagrams and 3D renders. Apart from the official press release other sources were examined, like pdfs from system suppliers like Gertrag.

Old magazine articles from my archive were especially useful for the historic review. This particular article is from the Greek 4troxoi (“4wheels”) magazine. In this issue from February 1988 there was an extensive article on the 408 Integrale.

The pencil and paper is irreplaceable and I used it for some quick notes and preliminary sketches in order to organize what should and must be created for the final article.

The article is quite popular especially with specific keywords search and it is possibly a world first. I hope you will find it interesting and I always welcome any comments in the respective forum topic.
